Actinic keratosis (AK) is a dry, scaly patch that forms on the skin after years of sun exposure. AK lesions can take on a variety of appearances, but they’re typically scaly with a sandpaper-like feel and range in color from skin-toned to reddish-brown. Lesions can be as small as the head of a pin or as large as a quarter (or even bigger if left untreated), and are considered the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer.

Actinic Keratosis Treatment

Because AKs are precancerous lesions and they can progress to squamous cell carcinoma they should be treated. Treatment options include cryosurgery (freezing of the lesions), shave removal, scraping, laser surgery, chemical peels, BLU-U® Blue Light treatment, and photodynamic therapy (PDT). There are also several medications available for the treatment of AKs, and regimens may vary depending on the kind of medication prescribed.
